Alessandra Ambrosio Models Fantasy Bra.

ALESSANDRA AMBROSIO will have the honour of modelling the Fantasy Bra during the 2012 Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show. Every year one Angel is selected to wear the prestigious jewel-encrusted piece – which is redesigned for each show – with Miranda Kerr, Gisele Bundchen and Heidi Klum all having modelled it in the past.
“I just wanted to scream,” said Ambrosio, on discovering that she had been chosen. “But I won’t lie, I was really worried.”
This marks the first time that Ambrosio has been selected to model the Fantasy Bra – which for 2012 takes a floral theme. The $2.5 million (£1.54 million) design features over 5,200 precious gems with a hand-picked selection of amethysts, sapphires, rubies and diamonds set in 18-carat rose and yellow gold. A 20 carat white diamond sits in the centrepiece.

The model described how she was at home breastfeeding her then three-week-old son Noah when she got the call back in May (“I was in total mother mode”) – but got to work shedding the baby weight as soon as her doctor gave her the green light.
“I was playing a lot of volleyball on the beach, swimming and running after my kids,” she told People. “And breastfeeding always helps!”
As with last year’s creation – modelled by Miranda Kerr – this year’s Fantasy Bra has been designed by Long Island’s London Jewellers.
“It was perfect – I felt they made it for me. It’s very romantic,” Ambrosio said of her first fitting. “I’m pretty calm. I’ve been waiting for this moment for a long time.”
The 2012 Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show is set to take place on November 7 and will feature performances from Rihanna, Justin Bieber and Bruno Mars. The catwalk spectacular will be broadcast on US television on December 4.

A Blonde Keira Knightley Reveals Why She Hates Skinny Jeans And Mini Skirts.

Keira is on the cover of W Magazine with a radical new look – she’s BLONDE. But it seems the queen of the couture gown is more conservative when it comes to her casual clothes. As the slim star revealed she doesn’t feel comfortable in tight jeans and micro minis.

She said to W Magazine: “I think skinny jeans and micro-miniskirts are very unfriendly. I’ve been known to wear both, but on some days it seems like they were invented to make you feel bad about yourself.” Of course we wanted to see what Keira is talking about and delved into her skinny jean wearing past and we can confirm Keira’s gone bonkers – she looks fab!

The cover shot of W is a radical new look for Keira as she has scraped back blonde hair, but she’s not the only star who has gone blonde for a magazine cover this month. Miranda Kerr has a striking blonde bob with a fringe for Vogue Italia.

Look through our gallery above and let us know which you prefer – Keira in skinny jeans or boyfriend jeans, mini skirts or midi skirts…

Fashion designer Glenn Beck releases ’1791′ denim line.

One year after conservative pundit Glenn Beck announced his intention to boycott Levi’s for their progressive advertising, Beck launched his own fashion line. His brand, “1791,” provides jeans only for men.
Beck’s denim ad is patriotic and wholesome compared to the 2011 Levi’s ad, which features a voice-over poem by Charles Bukowksi and sexy young people doing sexy things in jeans. Beck denounced the ad for promoting progressivism and ”glorifying revolution.”
Beck says he wants to give American men American jeans. 1791 is the year the Bill of Rights was added to the Constitution.
“100% made in America,” Beck’s website reads, “It has the copper rivets, it has the button fly, it has the exact fabric that, if you’re my age, you grew up with. The exact fabric that the miners used to use in the 1800s.”

The jeans, which went on sale Monday, start at $129.99 a pair and come in two styles: “Classic,” and, for edgier, more fashion-conscious people, “Straight.” Each pair of jeans features a button-closure with an American Indian on it, because Native American history is important to Glenn Beck.
The women’s clothing line, which ironically does not feature mom jeans, features non-progressive graphic tees — very reminiscent of 2004.
Perhaps President Barack Obama and Mitt Romney could take warning from this, as they too have been recently ridiculed for their mom-jean problem.

Hip-Hop Sensation Iggy Azalea Models For New House Of Holland Sunglasses Campaign.

Iggy Azalea, Australian underground hip-hop sensation, is certainly not shy of the camera. In her hits ‘Pu$$y’ and ‘Murda Business (featuring T.I.),’ the hip-hop artist proves she’s no wallflower, and we absolutely love her for it. And after signing with Wilhelmina Models this summer, she’s now taking over the fashion industry with her hipster-street chic and unapologetic philosophy. After a stint with Levi Jeans’ ‘Go Forth’ campaign, Iggy has landed the perfect campaign for her glamourpuss street style — she’s the face of House of Holland’s new sunglasses range.

From her bold fashion statements as a hip-hop artist, Iggy is a perfect fit for the wild prints, neon colours and geometric eyewear of HOH. With a clear, azure sky backdrop behind her, Iggy rocks the bright lippie and signature tight blonde locks. But most importantly, along with inspiring us to get holiday ready, Iggy embodies the glamorous-but-daring individualism that is synonymous with the of House of Holland aesthetic. In a campaign brimming with rebellious attitude (and juicy Popsicle colours), we’re convinced that it’s a match made in heaven.

And Henry Holland seems to agree, dubbing Iggy Azaela ‘the perfect ambassador for House of Holland eyewear.’ He also notes that ‘Iggy is super-hot in every sense.’ We can’t argue with him there! We hope this is the beginning of a long and fruitful house-to-muse relationship. Check out the Iggy Azalea for HOH campaign above and see if you’re sunny-inspired.

Paris Hilton documentary shelved.

Paris Hilton’s documentary was reportedly pulled by a US TV channel following her recent comments about homosexuals.
The hotel heiress’s programme about celebrity culture, Paris Hilton Inc, was due to air on gay-focused Logo twice this week but a note sent out by the channel said that it had “been removed from the schedule”.
According to the New York Post, network sources confirmed that the show was pulled in the wake of the controversy.
Paris apologised this week after she was recorded on tape claiming that gay people are “disgusting” and “most of them probably have Aids” as she sat in a New York cab with a friend.
“Ewwww… gay guys are the horniest people in the world. Most of them probably have Aids… I would be so scared if I was a gay guy… you’ll like die of Aids,” she was overheard saying.
Paris later admitted the gaffe but insisted in a statement from her spokesperson that she was trying to express the importance of safe sex and that her comments were not a reference to “all gays”.
The star also released a statement to the Gay And Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation website, accompanied by a picture of herself with the message ‘No H8′ on her cheek and a piece of tape over her mouth.
It read: “As anyone close to me knows, I always have been and always will be a huge supporter of the gay community. I am so sorry and so upset that I caused pain to my gay friends, fans and their families with the comments heard this morning.
“I was having this private conversation with a friend of mine who is gay and our conversation was in no way towards the entire gay community. It is the last thing that I would ever want to do and I cannot put into words how much I wish I could take back every word.

Simon Cowell dating Carmen Electra?

Simon Cowell is rumoured to be dating Carmen Electra.
The X Factor supremo and the former Baywatch actress were apparently spotted “making out” on a dinner date in Los Angeles, sparking speculation that they are an item, reported The Sun.
A source said: “They were getting very cosy. They were holding hands and staring into each other’s eyes – then they started making out.”
Photographs of the pair after the meal show Simon, 52, with his arm around the 40-year-old former Playboy model as they left the West Hollywood eatery together.
Simon and Carmen have apparently been seeing each other while he has been working on US X Factor and it is reported that they have enjoyed a string of dates.
A friend of Carmen’s said she is “getting back in the dating pool” following her split from guitarist Rob Patterson earlier this year, adding: “Simon treats her very well. It’s all very laid back at the moment but they are both enjoying themselves.”
However, a source told E! News that Simon and Carmen are “just friends” and that they were out for dinner with a big group of friends.
The insider said: “They are just friends from the UK and the US. They have known each other a while and she guest judged on Britain’s Got Talent.”
Neither star has commented on the romance rumours.
Simon previously dated model and TV presenter Terri Seymour and was recently in a relationship with make-up artist Mezhgan Hussainy. Carmen was previously married to Dave Navarro and Dennis Rodman.

Gangnam Style’s PSY breaks record.

South Korean pop star PSY has hit the record books with his Gangnam Style music video.
The rapper, with his distinctive horse-riding dance, has picked up a Guinness World Record after viewers clicked ‘like’ on YouTube more than 2.14 million times, making it the most liked video in the website’s history.
The closest competitors for most liked video on YouTube include LMFAO’s Party Rock Anthem with 1.57 million likes, and Justin Bieber’s Baby with 1.32 million likes.
PSY, whose real name is Park Jae-Sang, revealed in a press conference this week that his life has become so unreal he wonders if he’s being tricked into believing it, like Jim Carrey in The Truman Show.
He confessed that he cried in disbelief when his song entered the Billboard 100 earlier this month. The 34-year-old now says he’ll go topless in joy on a stage if Gangnam Style tops the chart.

John Mayer, Katy Perry Dating? Pop Star Isn’t His First Rebound Relationship.

Say what you will about John Mayer, but you’ve got to hand it to him: the guy has a way with the ladies.
The smooth crooner may have a history of over-sharing (who could forget him telling Playboy that Jessica Simpson was like “sexual napalm” in the sack?), but he’s still managed to date an impressive lineup of Hollywood’s loveliest ladies, including the recently divorced Katy Perry.
In fact, we couldn’t help but notice that a surprising number of Mayer’s lady loves are newly single, as if the singer-songwriter were lurking around the corner, waiting to strum “Your Body is a Wonderland” at the ready to cure them of their breakup blues.
We might be on to something. In November 2010, a friend of Mayer’s told The Huffington Post’s Rob Shuter that “there is something about newly-divorced ladies that drives him nuts.”
Click through the slides below to see five relationships that earned John Mayer the unofficial title as Hollywood’s Rebound King, then tell us: what is it about this guy that ladies love so much?

Daily Dating Site Coffee Meets Bagel Lands $600K From Lightbank.

Coffee Meets Bagel is a dating site based around the idea that volume isn’t necessarily a good thing when it comes to finding romance. Instead, it provides one match per day, every day at noon. We covered its NYC launch back in April, and now the startup is announcing a seed round of $600,000 in funding, led by Lightbank and including Match.com co-founder Peng T. Ong.

The new funding will be used to help Coffee Meets Bagel expand beyond its current markets of New York and Boston, to San Francisco, where the startup recently moved its offices ahead of launching in that city. Coffee Meets Bagel is rolling out slowly because it partners with local businesses to provide gifts and deals to lovers matched through its service, meaning there’s a strong place-based component.

In an interview, Coffee Meets Bagel co-founder Arum Kang explained that the service has had significant success since launch, growing 50% month-over-month, setting up over 100,000 introductions which have resulted in 6,000 actual direct connections between members. The member base is also highly engaged, with 70% of users actively checking the service for matches every day. Kang explains why she believes Coffee Meets Bagel attracts highly-engaged users.

“It works better because it’s simple, private, and fun,” she said. “It’s simple because we don’t inundate our members with low quality matches. We do the work for them, and keep the work on their part to a minute per day. The fact that it’s private – no one else except the two people matched for 24 hours see each other – also makes it more effective.”

Like competitor site, Coffee Meets Bagel offers its service for free, but it also uses a freemium model based around virtual credits to provide users with perks liek the ability to unlock the identity of mutual friends you and a match share on Facebook. These can be earned by users through various tasks, but also purchased directly, and that represents the site’s primary revenue for the time being. With enough traction, however, it’s easy to see Coffee Meets Bagel selling promotional opportunities to the businesses it partners with for member gifts and rewards.

This new investment brings Coffee Meets Bagel access to industry veterans who can provide strategic advantages to a brand new dating startup, and the site already has a unique approach. If it can scale while also providing local appeal, it’ll be a promising new entrant in the busy space of online dating.

Seth MacFarlane Dating ‘Game of Thrones’ Actress Emilia Clarke.

Things have been great lately for Seth MacFarlane – with the success of his new film, Ted this summer and the upcoming season of Family Guy, boy does he have it all… except the love of his life… till maybe now.
According to Life and Style magazine, Seth is now dating Game of Thrones actress Emilia Clarke as the duo “hung out” together at an Emmys after-party.
“They were very intimate at a small table in the back of the party. He put his hand on her thigh and rubbed it! They were very close and flirty.”
“When people came up to them, they moved apart like they were trying to hide that they’re an item,” the eyewitness says.
“I even overheard Seth saying to another person, ‘We’re not supposed to be at this table; it’s meant for Clive Owen, but we wanted to escape everyone!’” the eyewitness adds.
Could we be seeing more from these two in the near future?!! Do they make a cute couple?!

A Husband, A House, A Mortgage, A Baby, A Light Bulb Moment.

I had it all. I had the American dream. I lived in a beautiful loft in the heart of SoHo (okay, I know some of you want the house and the picket fence, I wanted a loft in New York City).
And I had the baby, the most wonderful daughter. And two dogs. I had everything I’d ever dreamed of and I was deeply, deeply grateful.
I had the wedding, with a beautiful dress from Paris with lace, made in the 1920′s — very much my style. I had a honeymoon at a lovely resort in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico.
We moved to New York City a few months after we got married to pursue our dreams. I was 34, not that young, but old enough to know what I was looking for. It had taken hundreds of dates, blind dates, fix-ups — there was no internet dating in those days. I’d lived with other men. It had taken hard work, but I was determined to find the love of my life and have it all. My career was in television writing and I was about to break into films. I could hear the biological clock ticking and I desperately wanted to have a baby. I had dated men in my business and I finally found someone who was an artist — intelligent, talented, articulate — and he made a living. He was a bit lonely and depressed, but I was going to rescue him and make him happy with a family and a home and everything that would answer all of his prayers — and mine — and we would live happily ever after.
And we did, for a time. It was great.

August 21st, 2012

It lasted until about a week after the wedding. And then, subtly, I sensed a shift. He had been attentive and available before, and within a few months after the wedding, I felt the door close. It wasn’t obvious, but in the first year of our marriage I wrote an essay that was never published called “The Myths of Marriage.” And the funny part was, I had taken a course years before about dating and marriage and one of the main points was that we present ourselves one way when we are trying to “get” someone and then once we “have” them; we let our guard down and we show who we really are.

I knew that and yet, I acted like I really enjoyed cooking though I hated cooking. And he acted like he really enjoyed spending weekends with me, when he really wanted to work seven days a week. But we made a commitment and we worked at it and we became a family.

There are few things in life more rewarding than finding someone you love, who loves you, who knows you and over the years, through all the difficult life experiences, is your ally and your friend and your sounding board and your lover. Those kind of relationships are hard to find.

August 20th, 2012

But after 23 years of marriage, we got divorced. I deserved more and he deserved to be who he was (turns out he didn’t really want to be rescued). And my beautiful lace dress from Paris? I had rented it from a costume house in Hollywood. Maybe even then I knew that you can’t hold on to some things forever, no matter how beautiful they seem at one time in your life.
Here is my suggestion: Be you. Don’t try to be anyone else.
Also, live your life with pleasure and do what you love and what is important to you. Work hard, play hard, don’t be waiting for someone to complete you. Complete yourself.
A great marriage is really a dream for most. It takes honesty — knowing and presenting who you really are. It isn’t for everyone; it takes effort and a great deal of compromise and patience. It is not the Nobel Prize of life. It is no longer even the American dream, or any dream. Perhaps you saw Eric Klinenberg’s piece in The New York Times about living alone in which he reports, “More people live alone now than at any other time in history… In Manhattan and in Washington, nearly one in two households are occupied by a single person… In Paris, the city of lovers, more than half of all households contain single people.” Even in Paris — my beloved city of lights — even they had a light bulb moment: living alone, or at least unmarried, need not be stigmatized or pathetic or necessarily lonely.
I don’t know if I will ever get married again. Divorce was one of the worst experiences of my life, which led me to one of the best and most productive periods of my life. I am not waiting to meet the next man to love; I am busy, working hard, grateful for my life, dating, dancing, enjoying my daughter, my friends and a rent-stabilized loft in SoHo, which I share with a good friend. Not a man. With men, I dance. And right now, that’s working really well for me.
Dreams are for when you are asleep. Life is what happens when you are awake. It’s never what you expect. Enjoy it.

Amy Winehouse Father Upset Over Jean Paul Gaultier’s Runway Show

Paying homage is a nice gesture, but sometimes it can piss off people.

Earlier this week, Jean Paul Gaultier hosted his haute couture runway show in Paris. As he showed off his new line, he paid tribute to the Amy Winehouse by having his models rock the beehive hair do that the late singer regularly rocked. While many saw this as a sign of respect, the Amy Winehouse family saw it as a slap in the face.

“We don’t support Jean Paul Gaultier collection,” Mitch Winehouse tweeted yesterday. “It’s in bad taste.”

In an interview with The Sun, the singer’s father says the tribute came as a total shock to him and the rest of the family. Seeing photos from the show upset the family, as they are still “grieving for her loss” and “had a difficult week with the six-month anniversary of Amy’s death.” He was upset to “see her image lifted wholesale to sell clothes,” especially since they were not consulted on the issue. He also felt the models were dressed in poor taste.

“We’re proud of her influence on fashion but find black veils on models, smoking cigarettes with a barbershop quartet singing her music in bad taste,” he says. “It portrays a view of Amy when she was not at her best, and glamorises some of the more upsetting times in her life. That’s upsetting for her family.”

Amy Winehouse was not the only person upset over the fashion show. Friend of the late singer and Fashion Police panelist Kelly Osbourne tweeted that ”although Gaultier was paying homage to her friend & icon to the world, she found it to be lucratively selfish and distasteful.”

Victoria Beckham Cutesy Teaser Video For Her New Diffusion Line

Running a close second to her bubba Harper on the adorbs scale is Victoria Beckham’s new advertisement for her forthcoming diffusion range, Victoria by Victoria Beckham.

Originally seen in the Telegraph earlier today, the teaser video hints at a big, booming color palette as well as ultra-feminine scalloped detailing. Fashionista have reported that the real advertisement itself will be even better; Victoria Beckham herself is rumored to make a cameo. The full-length and teaser have been created by filmmaker, Quentin Jones.

It’s a surprisingly youthful teaser, wouldn’t you agree? Like, almost suited to tweens if you go by the featured model. Personally, I’d like VB to utilize the ridiculous good looks under her own roof, i.e. her god of a husband, David Beckham, who managed to make quite the impression modeling his new H&M underwear line. Then again, it wouldn’t work with men and all. A cameo in the full-length perhaps, team? Do it.

A Chat With Pippa: Oprah Vs Barbra Walters

Oprah Winfrey always gets what she wants. But so does Barbra Walters. Unfortunately, only one of the talk show queens is going to get the most anticipated TV interview of 2012 – and it’s going to come at a price.

It’s been reported that since Pippa Middleton has announced her forthcoming book on party planning, both Oprah and Walters are willing to put down as much as $500,000 each in hopes of getting the new author to sit down and chat it up for an hour. Each host’s network has already submitted their requests to Middleton’s publisher, Penguin, sources said.

The book is expected to pull from the 28-year-old professional party planner’s day-to-day while working with London-based events company Table Talk.

A friend told the Daily Mail last November: “It will be about entertaining and how to throw the perfect party. It’s not just about being the perfect hostess – it will also include recipes and information about how to host different types of events.
Pippa has been sketching out the chapters and has decided to start each one with an amusing anecdote.”

What more perfect to chat about for an hour? And spend $500,000 to actually do it.

Where is your hometown? “I was born in Asheville, N.C.”

When did you first move to Craig? “My dad came to Hayden in 1964 to work on the first unit of the power plant when I was in junior high. My husband and I still live in Hayden, but I started coming here a lot for my business.”

Motto or outlook on life? “Life is not a dress rehearsal. You’ve got to live every day like it counts and make a difference for other people and for yourself.”

How did you first get involved in your job? “I had been coming to this dry cleaners for several years and bringing in my clothes for Gary Loyd to clean. He was looking to sell and probably leave the area and I thought that might be a pretty good business to have. As a customer, you have no idea what goes on behind the counter and I had no dry-cleaning experience and no business experience, in fact. I was a stay-at-home mom when my kids were growing up and did some different jobs.”

Favorite part of your job? “The people of Craig have been very welcoming of me, and I know the business has been here for about 60 years with Gary and his father. I’ve felt a real loyalty from people and it’s given me an opportunity to get to know a lot of families and businesspeople.”

Favorite part of life in Northwest Colorado? “The people. We have close-knit communities here because we’re rural and remote and we form bonds with people that I think we wouldn’t if we lived in a bigger area. There’s a lot of community spirit and people pulling together. I see it in Hayden and Craig, like starting a fundraiser and pulling together to make things better for others and make it all work. It’s just an awesome thing.”

Favorite meal from a local restaurant? “The prime rib sandwich from J.W. Snack’s with a side of okra. People think okra is kind of slimy, but if you get it fried, it’s kind of like eating French fries.”

A store or restaurant you’d like to see in the area? “When Walmart set up, I liked the idea of having the Sonic with the whole drive-in thing. Maybe we could get something like a Herberger’s, where you’d have a little different choice as far as clothing and bedding and things like that.”

How would you describe your life to a person you’d just met? “I feel like I’m very blessed. I haven’t had a lot of hardships in my life, and I’ve been married to the same person for 44 years with two wonderful children and grandchildren.”

Proudest accomplishment? “Right after Hurricane Katrina, there was a group of us who went to New Orleans, and we were also able to go a second time. There’s another group going in April to help in Joplin, Mo. I’m glad that I’m able to reach out and make life better for other people. I’d been to New Orleans several times before, and seeing people with their whole life in a crate that you’d put Christmas decorations or out-of-season clothes in was very humbling, seeing how they just picked up and moved on. We did a very small amount, but it just gave you a good feeling to be part of it.”

HE IS best known as pop superstar Britney Spears’ ex-husband, but now Kevin Federline is carving his own path.

The former backup dancer, nicknamed K-Fed and then K-Fat by the tabloids after his weight blew out dramatically, is one of the competitors in Nine’s new reality show, Excess Baggage.

33-year-old Federline made headlines around the world last week when he collapsed and was hospitalised while filming a challenge with the Greater Western Sydney Giants AFL team in Sydney.

It was the second time the father-of-five suffered a health scare during the shoot. He was also admitted to Karratha Hospital in December.

He said he was “terrified” during last week’s collapse.

“One of the reasons why I’m doing this is because I don’t want to worry about episodes like what happened on Monday,” he said.

“The whole thing just makes me real cautious about what I’m doing and what I’m putting my body through.”

K-Fed will answer PerthNow readers’ questions about his weight gain and loss, his health scare, life as ‘Mr Britney Spears’ and his future career plans on Tuesday at 2:30pm.

Treasure Coast business leaders and residents met representatives from the U.S. Department of Labor and U.S. Department of Commerce with a mix of hope and frustration at the third annual State of the Region presented by Florida’s Research Coast.

Two high-ranking federal officials spoke with optimism and advice to about 125 local residents Friday, but some residents took the question-and-answer session as a chance to vent about a wide variety of issues ranging from unemployment compensation to an inability to get green cards for business ventures. Other residents asked questions about how to better promote the area.

Assistant Secretary of the U.S. Department of Labor Jane Oates and Adam Wilczewski, chief of staff for the U.S. Department of Commerce International Trade Administration, extended an ear and promised to take considerations to Washington D.C.

Wilczewski filled in for Assistant Secretary of the U.S. Department of Commerce Suresh Kumar. The event took place at Florida Atlantic University’s Port St. Lucie campus.

Oates and Wilczewski sat through a question-and-answer session, though some of the questions turned into pointed comments about various business matters.

Former president and CEO of Port St. Lucie-based First People’s Bank Dave Skiles was one business leader who addressed the guests. His bank closed in July.

“You want to wonder why our recession has lasted so long, and it’s because banks are getting squeezed so badly by the overzealous regulations,” Skiles said. “In our area alone, we lost three community banks. One of them was mine.” Skiles received a round of applause after his comments.

Some residents expressed hope and asked how the Treasure Coast can continue to build its economy.

The two officials offered solace and advice on how the region can continue to improve its economy along with commenting on what the Treasure Coast is doing well now.

Oates said she was impressed with the amount of collaboration already taking place throughout the Treasure Coast.

“I really think that this area is doing everything right,” Oates said.

Wilczewski stressed the importance of exporting to foreign countries. He said only 1 percent of businesses in the U.S. currently export. He said the Department of Commerce is working to make it easier for companies to do so in part by vetting potential foreign clients.

“There’s no reason why companies don’t export,” Wilczewski said. “(With) 95 percent of consumers overseas, why wouldn’t you? It makes perfect business sense. More exports create more sales and more sales create more jobs. And the International Trade Administration is here to help.”

Laptop-free classrooms need to go

When was the last time you used a laptop?
Whether students type an essay in Microsoft Word, scroll through an article in PDF form or compile notes in Google Docs, technology serves as an integral part of our day-to-day college lives.
Naturally, when professors issue a “no laptops allowed” classroom policy, many students become discouraged.
We understand why they do it, as laptops are often considered a distraction. But as technology develops, it becomes increasingly intertwined with education. Instructors who don’t allow laptops in the classroom are behind the times.
Many professors argue that laptops are distracting. But let’s consider why students become tempted to hop on Facebook or to chat with friends in the first place — in many cases, they simply aren’t engaged in class.
Two-hour-long oral lectures and 50-slide PowerPoint decks full of black-and-white text do not keep students’ attention.
In many fields, the online sphere defines the future of the industry. Banning technology in the classroom sends conflicting messages about that development.
Banning technology assumes that the only solution to students’ short attention spans is the removal of distractions.
Students will inevitably face those same distractions as professionals once they enter the workforce. Rather than accusing laptops of being distracting, professors should use technology to their advantage to make classes more engaging.
A recent study by the Southern Cross University in Australia found that Twitter helps shy students share their ideas in the classroom and encourages class participation.
In the study, students anonymously tweeted their comments on class material and those comments showed up on their professors’ laptops via PowerPoint. In this manner, professors used laptops to engage students rather than distract them.
At a recent conference for journalism educators, Robert Hernandez, an assistant professor of professional practice, monitored a live Twitter feed, illustrating its ability to enrich conversation and encourage idea generation.
Twitter is a great example, but it’s only a starting point. Professors can brainstorm other ways to engage students through the use of online collaboration and technology tools.
Though USC does not have an official policy on laptops in the classroom, President C. L. Max Nikias recently mentioned in KPCC Radio’s “What is the Future of Higher Education?” roundtable discussion that USC has prioritized the integration of new technology into the classroom environment.
As part of this strategy, the university has added courses that weave interactive components into the usual lectures.
The responsibility of avoiding distractions on laptops, however, lies solely in students’ hands. Though it’s not a crime to discretely send a time-sensitive email in class, it’s another thing to spend an entire lecture scrolling through Facebook. Even if we opt to use our laptops, professors deserve our attention and respect.
Technology in the classroom is ultimately a two-way street. Professors must adopt it in a way that engages students and teaches them the material, and students should actively participate and not abuse laptop privileges in class.
Whether professors decide to allow laptops or not, they cannot deny that laptops are an increasingly essential part of student life.
If professors look to technology as a potential medium for improving the classroom experience rather than hampering it, both parties will benefit.

Monday Chat: Health officials spreading word about HIV/AIDS

Blacks comprise 9 percent of Indian River County’s population, but make up 50 percent of the people living there with AIDS.

That disparity concerns county health officials and they are sponsoring the National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day from 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Feb. 4 at the Gifford Youth Activity Center, 4875 43rd Ave.

“The goal is to help reduce the risk of getting or spreading the virus in the black population, which has a disproportionately high rate of HIV infections,” said John May, 52, HIV outreach coordinator for the Indian River County Health Department.

The actual awareness day is Feb. 7, but officials are observing it on a weekend to attract more people.
National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day does not do away with World AIDS Day, observed globally Dec. 1, but complements it, May said.
Martin County health officials plan to have staffers knock on doors of the East Stuart community to offer free HIV testing from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Feb. 6.
St. Lucie County Health Department will hold its day 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Feb. 11 at Pioneer Park, Avenue M and 29th Street in Fort Pierce.
Q: Why did you partner with the Indian River County Pastors Association?
A: One reason is that if community leaders can get out there and encourage people to get educated and tested, it will help stop the spread of HIV and AIDS. Getting more leaders educated about HIV and encouraging other leaders to do the same can have a great impact in the community and prevent the spread of this disease. If the pastors can preach over their pulpit about HIV awareness and local government leaders can take a stand and pass along the message about the importance of getting educated, tested and treated, it will benefit those in our community and county. Education is knowledge and knowledge is power.
Q: How has HIV/AIDS impacted the black community on the Treasure Coast and Florida?
A: When it pertains to HIV/AIDS, silence is death. Today, there is still silence in the black community and people continue to get infected and die from this preventable disease.
Q: Are there any estimates of how many people are living with HIV/AIDS in Indian River County and Florida?
A: There are 134 reported people living with HIV and 378 people living with AIDS in Indian River County. Blacks account for 50 percent of people living with HIV and 52 percent of people living with AIDS. In Florida, there are 46,814 reported people living with HIV and 48 percent are black, and 121,570 reported people living with AIDS, of which 49 percent are black.
Blacks account for the highest proportion of people living with HIV/AIDS when compared to white and Hispanic populations.
Q: What issues are leading to the spread of the virus in the black community?
A: Individuals not getting educated, tested, treated and not using protection are the main issues contributing to the spread of HIV in the black community. Without having the proper knowledge about one’s status, there is continued risk of spreading the disease, and there is greater risk of contracting the disease for those without proper prevention education.
Q: Please, detail the reasons people give for not getting tested.
A: People say they don’t have time and some just don’t want to know, possibly for fear that they may have the disease and the stigma attached to having the disease. Also, many people have a fear of needles.
Q: What support groups are available to people who are living with HIV or AIDS?
A: Indian River County Health Department and the Indian River County AIDS Awareness Network reach out through education and testing and encourage those infected with the virus get treatment. For more information call 772-794-7477. We want people to pass the message, not the disease. Get educated, get tested, get treated, get involved.

Women dies in rail crossing accident.

Women died after being hit by a train at a Hertfordshire foot crossing in what is thought to have been a “tragic accident”, police said.

The 16-year-old, who has not been named, died after she was struck at Johnson’s Footpath Crossing in Bishop’s Stortford, Hertfordshire, at around 11.45am on Saturday.

British Transport Police (BTP) said she was pronounced dead at the scene.

Network Rail (NR) said investigations were carried out on the crossing immediately after the incident and showed no faults with the safety measures in place. Flashing lights, audible warnings and signalling systems were all operational, a spokesman said, and there were no problems with the fence and gate at the crossing.

“The crossing was tested immediately afterwards, as always happens when something tragic like this happens,” he said.

“The crossing was shown to be in full working order.”

An investigation examining the full circumstances surrounding the teenager’s death, who is thought to be from Bishop’s Stortford, is being carried out.

Both Network Rail and British Transport Police are treating it as accidental.

BTP said: “The incident is being treated as a tragic accident and it has been declared non-suspicious.” An on site investigation had been completed and the crossing was reopened shortly after the incident because it was in full working order, the NR spokesman added.

NR is also co-operating fully with the Rail Accident Investigation Branch, which is involved in examining the circumstances surrounding the teenager’s death.

Web chat offers drug misuse advice

Adult carers worried about alcohol or drug misuse have the chance to get help and support through a special online web chat in February organised by a charity based in Rugby.

The web chat, hosted by drug and alcohol misuse charity Swanswell, will be holding the session with The Princess Royal Trust For Carers, offering information and guidance to adults who have a caring responsibility.

People will be able to take part in the free web chat, which will offer help and advice about drug and alcohol misuse, by visiting YanikaDate.com on Wednesday February 8 between 7pm and 8pm.

A member of the Swanswell team will be available to talk to adult carers who may be worried about their own alcohol or drugs use, or that of the person they are caring for.

Chris Robinson, Swanswell’s director of services, said: “We know there around 1.5 million adults in the UK affected by a relative’s drug misuse but many take on the burden of trying to deal with the issues themselves, without getting help.

“Often, it’s because the loved ones they’re looking after don’t want others to know about problems they might be facing or they just don’t know where to turn.

“So we’ve joined with The Princess Royal Trust For Carers to make it as easy as possible for those carers to get in touch for information and guidance about their own alcohol or drug use, or that of a friend or relative they’re looking after.

“We hope the online chat will give people the confidence and information to make the first step, so they can change and be happy.”

Sam Symington, online support manager for The Princess Royal Trust For Carers, said: “Our online forums would suggest that there are often issues with adults self-medicating with either prescription or illegal drugs, causing immense difficulties for those caring for them.

“We’ve also noticed that alcohol misuse and mental health issues are two other areas that carers are concerned about. However, many people don’t know where to go to get help. So we’ve organised this session with Swanswell to bring useful information directly to carers, who may not otherwise have come forward.”
